Project Information

You may have heard that the Town of Innisfil will be installing an accessible ramp where Adams Rd and Simcoe Blvd meet. The proposed ramp will be AODA (Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act) compliant to ensure it can be enjoyed and utilized by all users.

Why are we making these improvements?

The Town has a commitment to continuous improvement and to comply with accessibility guidelines. Making progress to an accessible Innisfil is a strategic priority as identified in the Community Strategic Plan. Improving accessibility benefits everyone who accesses Town goods, services and facilities and is a component to making Innisfil a diverse and inclusive community that strives to improve the quality of life for all persons.

When an exterior path of travel is being redeveloped, the AODA requires that it be done in an accessible manner subject to some exceptions. Since the existing staircase has exceeded its useful life, it requires a full replacement. The pathway serves a functional purpose by allowing pedestrians to walk from one road to the other, the AODA requires that a ramp be constructed at this location given the difference in elevation between the two roadways.

This section of roadway is identified in the Town's Trails Master Plan (TMP) as a connection for users of active transportation, including but not limited to cyclists and pedestrians. The TMP identifies these roadway sections of Lakelands Ave, Adams Rd and Simcoe Blvd as an area that will receive sharrows to better facilitate cycling activities and connections to downtown Alcona for all users.

In order to make this area accessible to all pedestrians, the ramp will:

  • Improve the condition and safety of pedestrian access between Adams Rd and Simcoe Blvd.
  • Comply with the AODA;
  • Comply with the Town of Innisfil's Community Strategic Plan which highlights that improving accessibility within the Town of Innisfil is a strategic priority; and
  • Make the community connections provided in the Town's Trails Master Plan.

What are the next steps?

Construction is currently scheduled to occur during the summer months of 2020 with an anticipated start date on June 22nd, 2020 and a completion date of October 5th, 2020.

What can be expected during construction?

The Contractor will be carrying out the work between 7:00am and 8:00pm, Monday to Friday. Increased noise and truck traffic can be expected during these hours.

Traffic disruptions may occur during construction hours. Access to private residences will be maintained. No lane closures are expected to occur as construction is taking place at the end of two roadways. In the event that a lane does need to be closed, there will be at minimum, one lane of traffic open for use with proper traffic control present.

Unfortunately, do to the constrained construction area of the dead ends of Simcoe Blvd and Adams Rd, the area will be closed to pedestrian access for the duration of construction.

The Town would like to thank you for your patience and cooperation as we construct the AODA Ramp.

The Town will continue to update this page as construction progresses to ensure you are up to date on the current construction status.
